What next for the old Wilkos store in Wellington?
The lights are on but nobody is home.
The once bustling homeware store has been closed for six months and it’s future is now even less certain.
Outside, the doorway is strewn with the belongings of a couple of homeless people. Food wrappers and sleeping bags, where shoppers would have been coming in and out.
At the sad end, even the empty shelves were being sold off. The council had to chip in with some help to repair the Market Street car park, a valuable asset for people visiting the other shops that are still open.
Although at the time of closing, Telford & Wrekin Council said they were relieved that the store was being taken over by Poundland, and jobs would be saved, we can reveal that this has turned out NOT to be the case.
Telford Live! today had confirmation that the promised takeover by Poundland has fallen through, with the discount giant being unable to agree terms with the landlord.
This white elephant of a store lies fallow, and it’s hard to think which white knight could come to the rescue.
