Telford drivers reluctant to report bad driving

Operation Snap, where drivers can report other drivers to Police by submitting dash cam videos and photos online has gathered almost 12,000 reports over the last three years.

An investigation by Accident Claims Advice has revealed that just 375 reports were lodged from Telford – less than half the amount sent in from the whole of Herefordshire.

The most commonly noted offence – recorded on 7,684 occasions in the West Mercia area – was careless driving or riding. This was followed by parking offences, which was the cause of 939 reports.

Mobile phone offences experienced the biggest rise, shooting up by 138% across the three-year period. 255 people were spotted on their phone while driving in 2023/24.

In contrast, 14 cases of drivers not using a seatbelt were recorded in 2021/22, but there were only ten in the next two years combined. It was a similar situation for drivers being snapped without a valid licence or MOT, with 23 cases in 2021/22 falling to 14, and then seven.
