Hospice funds raised by Telford students
Early years and health students from Telford College have raised more than £1,000 for charity through a series of fundraising events.
They have handed over £1,062 to Hope House Children’s Hospices, which aims to give every local child with a life-threatening condition and their family access to professional care and improve their quality of life from the point of diagnosis.
The group of more than 90 students, from health, early years, and supporting teaching and learning courses, chose the activities, including an alternative sports day, and fundraising walk up The Wrekin.
“Many of them had never walked up The Wrekin – despite always living in Telford,” said Rachael Round, Telford College’s learner manager for early years and education.
“Inclusive practice is paramount when working with children, so the alternative sports day was a way of showing another way of being competitive, keeping fit and having fun without the pressure of an organised sport.
“The level one childcare group also chose to have stalls outside the hub where they sold loom bands, did origami and organised a competition to win a cuddly toy.”
Rachael said the students chose Hope House to benefit from the fundraising following a talk by former Telford College lecturer Tracy Leah, who is now a nurse with the charity.
She visited the Wellington campus to provide advice for students who may wish to go into paediatric nursing or special education needs.
Rachael added: “We had not done this kind of fundraising activity before, but the students will now continue to raise for Hope House and are already planning the next activities.
“They feel proud of their achievements and contributions in raising such a large sum. They have enjoyed the activities and the recognition that they are doing something worthwhile to help children live their best lives.”
