Community grant fund to mark 80th anniversary of VE Day launched

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and 80 years since communities came together on Victory in Europe Day to celebrate peace, mourn those that were lost, thank those that fought and look forward to the future with hope.

To mark this special anniversary, Telford & Wrekin Council is launching a grant fund to help local communities and groups host their own events and activities on or around VE Day on 8 May 2025.

Voluntary and community groups, town and parish councils, schools and not for profit organisations can apply for small grants of up to £750 or larger grants of up to £1,500 to contribute towards the costs. Groups will need to provide match funding but can seek support for this from local ward members who will also be marking this anniversary through the 2025/26 Councillor’s Pride Fund.

Councillor Raj Mehta, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Inclusion, Engagement, Equalities and Civic Pride, said:

“This year marks the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day and the end of World War II.

“It is important now more than ever that we learn the lessons of the past, celebrate the diversity of our communities and promote international friendships. That’s why we’re making this fund, which totals £50,000 available to local groups, in grants of up to £1,500 available to help celebrate the occasion.

“Grants can be used to cover a range of costs including venue and equipment hire, entertainment, resources and materials, and successful applicants will also be able to apply, free of charge, for temporary road closures for street parties or community gatherings.
“Some match funding will also be available from local ward members through our Councillor’s Pride Fund, to help local communities celebrate this special anniversary.

“The grant is open for applications from today (Friday 24 January) and closes at 9.30am on Monday 24 February. “
