Happy Easter
We still have sprouts in the cupboard, yet if the supermarkets are to be believed, Easter is nearly upon us.
The Quality Street have been cleared from the shelves in Morrisons, and in their place, unseasonal confectionary in the shape of Easter Eggs and Chocolate Bunnies.
It seems we have skipped Valentines Day and are going straight in for Easter. We’re almost at the point now, where the retail sector may just as well leave the Christmas Cake on the shelves all year round.
Retail is a mess. The shift from onstreet to online is so seismic that it’s hard to see how even the most niche, pure retail small businesses can exist without a digital or service offering.
The shift from something to buy to something to do is lit large in the repurposing of the old Debenhams store at the Town Centre. Now a complete entertainment centre in Flip Out and Putt Putt Noodle. The goods swapped for good times.
There are still some gems on the high streets. Shops like Spinning Around Records, who embrace TikTok and initiatives like World Record Day. Allums Jewellers, where customers need to see and touch the goods, and also offer a repair service.
These examples provide hope against the homologation of our High Streets.
On the positive side, the Dairy Milk Freddo Easter Egg is only £1.75.
