Change of pace for young netballers
A group of young girls who started their netball journey through a free council-run programme, have taken their skills to the next level by joining a local netball club.
The girls started out through Telford & Wrekin Council’s Urban Games programme, as their skills and love for the game quickly developed with help and encouragement from the coaches at Telford Netball Club, they’re now part of a team playing weekly.
Councillor Raj Mehta, Cabinet Member for Inclusion, Engagement, Equalities & Civic Pride, said: “The Urban Games programme is designed to encourage healthy, active lifestyles while providing a safe and enjoyable environment for children and young people to try something new. Parents can rest easy knowing that all activities take place in a safe, supervised setting.”
The club has welcomed the new players providing access to top coaches and the opportunity to compete in local leagues and tournaments.
Denise Westwood – Telford Netball Club coach and chairwoman said: “It’s been wonderful to see these girls develop and go from just having a try through the Urban Games to now competing at a higher level. We’re excited to help them continue to grow and achieve their goals in netball.”
The Urban Games programme is open to young people up to the age of 16 and is funded through the council’s Building Safer and Stronger Communities programme, in partnership with West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner.
Professional coaches from AFC Telford United Foundation, the 4 All Foundation, Shropshire Cricket, Telford & Wrekin Hockey Club, and Telford Bike Hub will be leading sessions across Telford and Wrekin during February half-term to ensure high-quality instruction and plenty of fun for all.
