This piece of history may disappear in just a few months
Standing up the hill overlooking the Ironbridge Gorge stands a relic from the past which may be consigned to the scrapyard in just a few months time.
The British Telecom public phone kiosk was once a much needed lifeline to the world. This K6 model was installed throughout the UK from 1936 to late 1960s.
Its hard to comprehend how we’ve gone from communal phones for a neighbourhood, through to having home phones and then to mobile phones in around 40 years.
I doubt many under 30s will have set foot in one of these phone boxes – even fewer to make a call. And thats the issue for BT – not enough people making calls to keep this particular box connected.
As the public phones are disconnected, many of the phone boxes have remained in place and been repurposed to house defibrillators, or even community libraries.
If you think this one in Belmont Road, Ironbridge should stay, you can ask Telford & Wrekin Council to save it. If you want to buy one of your own, you can pick them up on ebay for about £2000.
What should happen to this one?
