Where is Old Kent Road in Telford?
Old Kent Road is the cheapest square on the game but the Telford equivalent remains a mystery. Can you help?
Makers of the brand-new MONOPOLY: Telford & Wrekin Edition game have been “wonderfully” overwhelmed with suggestions during a recent public consultation period.
But they say one square is proving a bigger challenge than, well, breaking out of the MONOPOLY jail! “We can’t find an equivalent Old Kent Road,” reveals Ben Ladd Gibbon, who has led the consultation process.
Now they are appealing to the public to help them fill the square.
Mr Ladd Gibbon and his team have been through each and every suggestion since polls closed three weeks ago.
“We’ve been wonderfully spoilt with choices in all areas from Mayfair to Whitechapel Road – except one,” adds Mr Ladd Gibbon, Custom Games Executive at Winning Moves UK, who are producing the special edition MONOPOLY board under license from Hasbro, a leading toy and game company.
In the classic Monopoly – based on London – the first and cheapest square to feature is Old Kent Road. Although sometimes derided in a fun way, Mr Ladd Gibbon insists that the Old Kent Road square is very high cachet because it is so well known and talked about. “It will be a coup for some landmark or organisation to feature on it,” he says.
It was announced on February 6th that the region is getting its very own MONOPOLY board game. At the time, the public was invited to send in suggestions for local landmarks, such as the Iron Bridge and the Thomas Telford Statue to be featured in the game. Polls closed last month but are re-opening for one week from today to solve the Old Kent Road riddle.
Mr Ladd Gibbons adds: “We would like to formally thank each and every person who sent in nominations.”
In all, 30+ Telford and Wrekin landmarks and favourites will be showcased in the game. The new MONOPOLY board will see local landmarks, replacing the likes of Mayfair and Park Lane from the classic MONOPOLY game.
Over the last 30 years, Winning Moves UK has produced official versions of MONOPOLY board games featuring locations across the world, from Palm Springs to Phuket and Dubai to Dublin. Now, the MONOPOLY dice are rolling on Telford & Wrekin.
The MONOPOLY: Telford & Wrekin Edition game hits shops this October. Suggestions for an Old Kent Road equivalent for the region will be accepted for consideration from today until 23:59 p.m. on March 19th 2025 by email to: telford@winningmoves.co.uk.
