Smart spray introduced in off road bike fight
West Mercia’s Operation Spree continues to target the anti social use of off road bikes, and the Smart Tag spray is now in operation over various sites in Telford.
The Smart Tag spray is a traceable forensic liquid (Smart Water) with each canister containing a unique chemical code that is invisible to the naked eye, but once placed under UV light it shines brightly.
The system is carried by various Safer Neighbourhood Team officers, if anyone is found riding an off road bike in an area they should not be, then there will be a direction for the rider to stop. If that direction is ignored, the SmartTag spray will be deployed onto the clothing of the rider and the bike.
The spray can be used at a distance of 15 metres and the liquid deployed is harmless. The forensic liquid sprayed will remain on skin, hair, clothing and bike.
When suspects are identified there are a number of possible outcomes including prosecution for dangerous/careless driving that could include bans or points on licences, Section 59 notices, seizure of motor vehicles that could result in disposal, as well as Criminal Behaviour Orders or Community Protection Notices.
Recently, one rider was identified in Oakengates where, according to Police, members of public came forward following an appeal and as a result the rider has now been issued with a section 59.
