Therapy dog puts a smile on students’ faces
Students at Telford College have a new four-legged friend.
His name is Doug the therapy dog, and he’s putting a smile on the faces of students at the college’s Willow Tree Centre.
The centre, at the Wellington campus, provides a safe and stimulating environment for those with severe learning difficulties and complex needs.
The Welsh Collie has been chosen for his gentle nature and friendly demeanour, and is now set to visit the students twice a month.
Kimberley Gunter, manager of the Willow Tree Centre, said: “Doug has had extensive experience in various settings, including training, grooming, and therapy. The positive impact he has on our students at the Willow Tree Centre is undeniable.
“When Doug is in the building, students demonstrate better self-regulation and reduced anxiety, creating a calmer and more focused learning environment. His presence also helps prepare students for interactions with dogs in the wider community, reinforcing the importance of responsibility and care.
“Doug truly enjoys his college days, eagerly meeting new friends and providing comfort to those who need it.”
Emma McCartney, Willow Tree and additional needs business administrator, added: “Doug’s visits are filled with activities such as petting, brushing, and playing games, which not only bring smiles to the students’ faces but also helps to improve their motor skills and coordination.
“For many students, Doug is more than just a dog offering therapeutic support; he is a friend who listens without judgment and offers unconditional love.”
