Wrekin walkers now subject to one way rule
Following the success of the one way system for cars at the foot of the Wrekin, the boffins who look after the walkway up the hill have come up with a similar plan to improve the experience for walkers too.
Most people are familiar with the path on the Wrekin – up past Halfway House on to Hells Gate, Heavens Gate and the summit, just to turn around and come back down the same way. According to the Wrekin Area Naturalists Keep Exploring Round Society, vistors are missing out. Spokesperson Opal Firlo told Telford Live “The old miners track down the steep side of the Wrekin is under under utilised as only 1/4 walkers use it.
“It is quite steep, especially for older people, but on the plus side, there is a lot more undergrowth to break a fall. Don’t forget that the one way operation is much safer because walkers won’t bump into each other coming in the other direction.”
“We would urge walkers not to leave anything behind at top, because the new Wrekin Wardens have the authority to issue tickets if you turn back to retrieve it.”
The new trial system starts today, and if it’s successful, it will eventually apply to cyclists and runners too.
