£2 Bus fare cap to stay on Council routes

Fares for non-Council run services will be capped at £3 after the new government extended the fare cap, which was due to expire altogether on 31 December, but Telford & Wrekin Council has confirmed that single ticket prices on its council-run bus services in Telford and Wrekin will remain at just £2 for adults and £1 for children.

The seven Telford & Wrekin Council-run bus routes are Travel Telford Services 99, 100, 101, 102, 103, 104 and 105. A comination of funding sources has enabled Telford & Wrekin Council to keep the costs down, including using money from housing developers.

Councillor Lee Carter, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “These popular services are funded through a combination of support from government, income from Section 106 planning agreements, revenue from ticket sales and from council funds. The funding model was agreed in the 2022 council budget, and has been provided for in successive budgets since.

“As part of the Autumn Budget, the new Government announced a £1bn funding boost for buses in local areas, which we welcome and look forward to seeing more detail on soon. The new Government has also made announcements about local authorities having more control over buses in the future, so we will be exploring those opportunities once the next stage of the process is announced.”

The routes cover some of the most popular commuter routes from rural and urban residential areas connecting with key education and employment destinations, as well as links to the Princess Royal Hospital and local town centres.
