College gathers together to remember

Hundreds of students and staff from Telford College took part in the annual remembrance parade and commemoration today, to honour the service and sacrifice of all those who have defended our freedoms.

The parade was led by the college’s public uniformed services students, and included representatives from the British Army reserves, Royal Navy, West Mercia Police, and Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service.

The parade was led by a second-year public uniformed services student from the college, Sophie Heighway. Telford College tutor Stuart Gregory played The Last Post, and Reveille.

A two-minute silence was observed across the college to show respect for those who lost their lives during the war – giving their tomorrows for our todays.

Melanie Newbrook, the college’s learner manager for sport and public uniformed services, opened the ceremony, saying: “We are here today to remember those who took the ultimate sacrifice for us to be able to live in a free and democratic society.”

Andy Turner, Telford College’s director of vocational studies, closed the ceremony with a show of gratitude for all the service personnel who supported the event, and to students for showing ‘the respect and behaviour that reflects the college’s values’.
