New Safer Spaces initiative includes phone charging points

Safer Spaces have been set up in busy town centres across Telford offering a safe place for anyone to use when enjoying a night out.

The spaces, which are run by West Mercia Police Officers and PCSOs, will be available to anyone who may need assistance, and will also provide charging points for people who may need to charge their mobile phones as well as providing bottled water.

The initiative forms part of the force’s Op Presence and will be available tonight (Friday 20 December) and tomorrow (Saturday 21 December) in Newport, Southwater and Wellington.

Inspector Jodie Davies, from Telford’s Problem Solving Hub, said: “This is the first year we have introduced Safer Spaces as part of our Op Presence plans, which we have set up in our busiest town centres where we know there will be increase in footfall during the night time economy as people celebrate the festive period.

“This is the second weekend we have set up the Safer Spaces where officers can provide assistance to anyone who needs it; whether that be somewhere to charge their phone or help in locating their friends if they have become separated.

“Anyone is welcome to use the spaces over the weekend, and we hope that those enjoying a night out this weekend stay safe.”

The Safer Spaces are working in partnership with the Interfaith Council, Wenlock Springs – who provided the water, and West Mercia’s Police and Crime Commissioner – who provided the funding for the chargers and blankets.

The Safer Space locations are:
Main Street, Newport – West Mercia Police Engagement Van
Southwater in Telford Town Centre
Interfaith Centre on New Street, Wellington
