Telford indoor rowers bring home the medals at British Championships.

Three indoor rowers from a Telford club are celebrating after they brought home the silverware from the British Rowing Indoor Championships.

The national event, held at Birmingham NEC, saw hundreds of indoor rowers battle it out to achieve the fastest 2,000m time in their age category.

The three rowers from Wrekin Rowers, an indoor rowing club based at Wrekin College in Wellington, brought home podium positions, with the oldest indoor rower competing for the club standing on the top spot on two occasions in one day.

Derek Vaughan brought home two gold medals with his first position in the 80-84 age category with a time of 8.34.4 minutes and also took first place in the 500m race with a time of 1.48.9 minutes.

Dave Williams, competing in the 65-69 age category took silver with a time of 7.33.5 and Irene Lysons also came second in the 75-79 age category with a time of 10.30.9.

Other members of the borough indoor rowing club included: Mike Robinson who came 6th in the 65-69 age group with a time of 7.24.3; Cally Hammond, age 55-59, came 7th with a time of 8.45.4; Mike Lysons, 40-49, came 7th with a time of 6.56.7; Stew Edmondson, 55-59, came 8th with a time of 6.50.7; Rob Sowdon, 60-64, came 8th with a time of 8.13.8; Camilla Stewart, 40-49, came 9th with a time of 7.50.2; Richard Greaves, 50-54, came 22nd with a time of 7.09.0 and Mark O’Hanlon, 55-59, came 26th with a time of 7.35.4.

Jim Mostyn, who runs health and fitness clubs Wrekin Rowers and Gym Mostyn with his wife Sally, said all of the indoor rowers achieved fantastic results at the fully inclusive event.

“It is phenomenal to see three of our rowers make the podium with Derek taking first place in both the 2,000 metres and the 500 metres but irrespective of the podium positions, every rower from our club did amazingly well in their respective age category.

“In my view the British Championships is one of the most inclusive events around – people of all ages and people of all abilities – including some with many physical challenges – all tackling the same challenge on the same machines. The indoor rower means everyone can take part which is a joy to see,” Mr Mostyn said.

“Our indoor rowing classes have been running for 23 years now; it is a sport which is enjoyable and people stick at it and as we all know consistency is key in whatever sport you do.

“The ages of our rowers range from teenagers to 80+ which is wonderful to see. All in the same room, rowing to music, all at the same time with just their own challenges and aims against the numbers on their own monitor.”
