Burton Borough teacher takes top mentoring award

A Shropshire teacher has been officially recognised for his incredible mentoring skills and his support for colleagues.

Rick Kelso-Davies is head of geography at Burton Borough School, in Newport, and alongside his main responsibilities he also mentors trainee teachers and those in the early years of their career.

Now his dedication to supporting other staff has been rewarded with the title of Mentor of the Month for February by Best Practice Network – a national company that designs and provides training to education professionals.

Rick said: “It was a real shock to hear I’d been given the award but I’m extremely proud to have received such recognition.

“I thoroughly enjoy helping colleagues who are just starting out in the profession. It’s so rewarding to share my experiences and knowledge to help them begin what I hope will be a productive and successful career.”

Lisa Kane, lead practitioner for whole school teaching and learning, said: “We are extremely proud that Rick has been recognised for his excellence and dedication. He has given up a countless amount of time to support colleagues to ensure they are developing into outstanding teachers.”

Burton Borough principal Caroline Bedford said: “We are delighted to see Rick achieve the Mentor of the Month award for his role working alongside our early career teachers, supporting them in developing their teaching skills.

“We can’t thank him enough for all his hard work for our school community and his commitment to helping new teachers so they can begin their careers in a positive and welcoming environment.”

Burton Borough School is part of the Learning Community Trust which runs five secondary schools in Telford & Wrekin. Other sites are Hadley Learning Community, Ercall Wood, Charlton, and New Road Academy.
