Start a new career and Step Up to Social Work

Telford & Wrekin Council has announced the opening of recruitment for the Step Up to Social Work programme. This is a call for passionate and aspiring Social Workers to join this intensive yet incredibly fulfilling training initiative.

The Step Up to Social Work programme is a 14-month, full-time training opportunity designed for accomplished graduates and individuals seeking a career change. It seeks to cultivate the next generation of child and family social workers dedicated to supporting vulnerable children, young people, and families. The programme is tailored for those who wish to become Social Workers but do not possess a degree in the field. Participants will benefit from a blend of academic study and practical social work experience within a local authority setting.

Eligible applicants will receive financial support throughout the programme. Ideal candidates are those with hands-on experience working with vulnerable groups, who can demonstrate emotional resilience and an aptitude for success. A key aim of the programme is to attract a diverse range of applicants, fostering a workforce that truly reflects the community it serves.

Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education, Employment and Skills, said: “The Step Up to Social Work programme is not just an opportunity; it is a commitment to our community and an investment in our future.

“By nurturing the talents of passionate individuals, we are creating a workforce that mirrors the diversity and strength of the families we serve. This initiative is about more than training; it’s about transforming lives and building a brighter tomorrow for everyone in Telford and Wrekin.”

Isabelle Trowler, the Chief Social Worker for Children and Families, continued: “It is excellent to see the quality of the hundreds of graduates who qualify as Social Workers through the Step Up programme, and encouraged to see them start out on a long-term career in social work. Our profession is highly challenging but highly rewarding, and Step Up is developing a highly skilled workforce ready to make a genuine positive impact on people’s lives.”

Supported by the Department for Education, the Step Up programme will facilitate 700 individuals’ entry into the social work profession across England by 2026. This initiative includes funding for training expenses and a bursary of £21,995 to support participants throughout the programme.

This will mark the ninth cohort of the Step Up programme since its inception in 2010. To date, it has successfully guided over 2,900 social workers into the profession across England.
