Expert workshop to help employers tackle workplace addiction

A leading Shropshire HR consultancy and pioneering community company have joined forces to stage a special event to help employers identify and support staff with issues around addiction.

Triangle HR and Telford-based A Better Tomorrow say the free interactive half-day workshop on April 10 will equip employers and managers with the knowledge, skills and confidence to recognise, address and support addiction in the workplace.

The event – at Weston Park on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border – will feature real-world case studies, expert-led discussions and a range of activities to highlight the issue and the part employers can play in supporting their staff.

Scott Morgan and Martin Cantrill, chief executive and chief operating officer of A Better Tomorrow, will share their personal experiences and the role the company plays in supporting individuals in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, those with poor mental health and women fleeing domestic abuse.

Nikki Hall, managing director of Triangle HR, said the event was a fantastic opportunity to build better understanding around the issue.

“Addiction is an issue that nearly everyone has some experience with, if not personally then through a friend or family members. As such it’s vital that all employers are aware of the issues and considerations surrounding this topic.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to hear from those with ‘lived experience’, to understand the true impact of addiction on our lives, society, and the world of work, and to understand how everyone can help shape a path to a better future through recovery.”

Scott Morgan said the free workshop would give real-life insights into the issue and help employers become more confident in helping employees affected by it.

“The workshop is about creating a healthier, more resilient workplace where employees feel safe, supported, and empowered to seek help.

“We know from our own experiences just how important that can be in the recovery process and the significant benefits it can bring for both employees and employers.”

Key outcomes of the workshop will be the ability to:

  • Identify early warning signs of substance use and addictive behaviours
  • Learn effective intervention strategies to address concerns with empathy and professionalism
  • Understand legal and ethical considerations when handling addiction-related workplace challenges
  • Explore best practices for fostering a supportive culture

The event gets under way at 9.30am and includes sessions on insights into addiction, case studies, personal stories of addiction and recovery and practical advice for employers, as well as an opportunity for networking during a break for refreshments.

A Better Tomorrow was set up in 2014 and now provides accommodation and services to support more than 700 clients and works closely with Telford & Wrekin Council. It has helped 3,742 individuals to move forward positively with their lives over the last decade.
