A Minecraft Movie is the biggest “BLOCK-BUSTER” This Easter

Film review by Jason Wright

The film stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers and Danielle Brookes and tells the story of 2 siblings Natalie and Henry [Myers and Hansen] who’s mother has passed on, and so they move to a little town where they meet Dawn [Brookes] who is their real estate agent and Garret” The Garbage Man” [Momoa] and 80’s videogame champion who still hangs onto the past.

The four of them accidently end up sucked into the world of Minecraft via a portal Henry created by putting a magical cube into a casing.

First I’d like to get the negativity out of the way, I think this film has a pacing issue. To me the opening intro was a bit of a slow opener, but once they enter The Minecraft World, it moves really fast and does not give the audience a chance to breath and

take-in this world.

The other criticism i had with this feature was that i could not help but compare this to 2014’s THE LEGO MOVIE. They are both films based on popular IPs, they are both movies about building blocks and they both feature characters entering different worlds, so yeah it was hard to not compare the two.

However, this movie does have some positives and pretty strong ones. First of all, the set design. The way they made the blocky cubes come to life was beautiful and the production design team did a really nice job bringing Minecraft to Life. Second of all, the visuals for the mobs don’t actually look half bad, especially the Piglings and my favourite mobs, the Creepers.

Now I would like to talk about the cast. I have been excited to talk about this film’s cast, so yes, while Jack Black and Jason Momoa were a great duo, to me the standout duo was Emma Myers and Sebastian Hanson. The pair played the brother and sister dynamic so naturally and heartwarming, and Emma in particular gives a really believable and kind of tear jerking performance. Emma Myers was the break out star in this film for me, oh and Danielle Brookes gets some good laughs too.

So overall, or Over World, while this film is not ground breaking, amazing or winning any awards, A Minecraft Movie is an okay enough film to please any fan of the game, and is definitely one to take the kids to This Easter.

So overall I give it a 6/10, I just wish the pacing was done better and it wasn’t too much like THE LEGO MOVIE.
